Nigeria’s Udodi Chudi Onwuzurike produced a season’s best performance to claim the silver medal in the men’s 200 metres at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, further boosting Team Nigeria’s impressive athletics campaign.

The 23-year-old sprint star crossed the finish line in 20.09 seconds, finishing behind South Africa’s Sinesipho Dambile, who stormed to gold in 19.96 seconds. Jamaica’s Christopher Taylor settled for bronze after clocking a personal best of 20.11 seconds in a thrilling sprint final.

Onwuzurike‘s silver-medal run was his fastest performance of the 2026 season and reaffirmed his status as one of Nigeria’s brightest sprint talents.

The former World Under-20 champion executed a strong bend and fought hard down the home straight, narrowly holding off Taylor in one of the closest finishes of the evening.

Canada’s veteran sprinter Aaron Brown finished fourth in 20.18 seconds, while Jamaica’s Jevaughn Powell came fifth in 20.36 seconds. Australia’s Lachlan Kennedy placed sixth in 20.41 seconds, Ghana’s Joseph Paul Amoah was seventh in 20.47 seconds, and Botswana’s Prince Phaezel Selepe completed the field in 20.54 seconds.

The silver medal adds to Nigeria’s growing haul at the Glasgow Games, where the country’s athletes have delivered a series of standout performances in athletics. Earlier on Friday, Ezekiel Nathaniel captured gold in the men’s 400m hurdles, highlighting Nigeria’s resurgence on the track.

For Onwuzurike, the podium finish marks another significant achievement in an already impressive career. The Nigerian, whose personal best of 19.76 seconds ranks among the fastest ever by an African sprinter, demonstrated his class by returning to the Commonwealth podium with a composed and determined performance against a world-class field.
