Law enforcement officers in Edo State have arrested five suspected c@lt!sts in separate operations, according to the police commissioner.
Patrick Daaor said one arrest occurred on August 7 at Akpakpava when officers from the Anti-Kidnapping Unit apprehended a 27-year-old man named Andrew Friday.
The arrest came after transport workers discovered an abandoned sack at their office on August 5.
When officers searched the sack, they found three locally made p!st0ls hidden under unripe plantains that were supposed to be shipped to Benue State.
During questioning, Friday admitted he had sent the sack and said he was a member of a c@lt group.
He claimed the firearms had been given to him by someone for repairs and were meant for use in an ongoing c@lt r!v@lry in another state.
In a second operation, officers arrested four more suspected c@lt members at a community in Benin City.
The four men, aged between 27 and 30, were caught following intelligence work by law enforcement and government security personnel.
Officers recovered four homemade p!st0ls, one locally made Beretta p!st0l and one cut-to-size double-barrel gun from the group.
All four admitted to being members of a c@lt group.
The police commissioner said investigations are ongoing to find other members involved in both cases.
He urged residents to watch out for suspicious activity among their neighbours, friends, colleagues and family members.
