The All Progressives Congress (APC) supporters who gathered on Tuesday morning at Igbogi area of Ilesa for the party’s final campaign rally were brutally attacked by gunmen even before the rally commenced.
Four members of the party were reportedly shot in the tragic incident, with two killed and two others left in critical conditions.
The attack was said to have occurred at about 7:30a.m, shortly before the party’s scheduled 8a.m rally, as supporters converged on the venue for the commencement of the final campaign activity.
The Osun State Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, who confirmed the incident and the casualty figure to PM NEWS said a reprisal attack was suspected.
It will be recalled that a bloody clash between two cult groups, the Aiye and the Eiye confraternities, in the Imo area of Ilesa, Osun State on Monday led to three deaths.
The three victims were simply identified as Idowu, Yinka and Eja.
Therefore, the police suspect the Tuesday attack to be a reprisal of Monday’s killings.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police (Election), CP Erale Etaifo, has sent a team of officers to the scene to carry out an on-the-spot investigation.
No arrest has been made as of press time.
