The ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Anambra State has won all 21 local government chairmanship positions in the state.
The party also won all 362 ward councillorship positions in the election that took place last Saturday.
The Chairman of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC), Mrs Genevieve Osakwe, who spoke to journalists after the declaration of the full results, said all the candidates of the party had officially been declared winners.
She said: “The elections took place across 362 electoral wards and 21 local government areas (LGAs) in Anambra State and were conducted in a peaceful, free, fair, transparent and credible manner in line with the state electoral laws and guidelines.”
Reacting to previous information that the Young Progressives Party (YPP) in Anambra East LGA withdrew from the election along with its chairmanship and councillorship candidates as a result of violence and malpractice, Osakwe said the commission was not aware.
According to her, the YPP candidate scored 1,658 votes, while the APGA candidate scored 50,169 votes in the local government to emerge as the winner.
She appreciated the people of the state for having confidence in the commission during the voting process, as well as the security agencies and the media for their support before, during and after the electoral exercise.
In his brief reaction on behalf of other elected mayors, the newly elected Chairman of Ayamelum Local Government Area, Hon Emmanuel Igwebuike, commended the state governor, Chukwuma Charles Soludo, the commission, the security agencies and the media for ensuring a conducive environment during the election.
