County Grammar School, Ikwerre/Etche, once acclaimed as Nigeria’s best public secondary school, may soon receive a major facelift as the chairmen of Ikwerre and Etche Local Government Areas move to address its deteriorating condition.
The commitment followed a visit by the school’s Old Boys Association, led by its National President, Hon. Vincent Erinwo, to the Ikwerre council chairman, Hon. Charles Wobodo, in Isiokpo.
The old boys, including former Rivers State University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Simeon Achinewhu, appealed for urgent intervention over the school’s lack of electricity and deteriorating buildings.
Wobodo said he was prepared to work with the Etche chairman, Hon. Chima Njoku, who is also an alumnus of the school, to restore the institution.
“I am ready to support this initiative. The Executive Chairman of Etche Local Government Area, Hon. Chima Njoku, who is also an old student of this institution, and I have been discussing this matter. We understand the urgency,” he said.
He promised to explore the provision of a transformer and connection of the school to the electricity grid, while also supporting the installation of solar-powered street lights.
Wobodo added that both councils would approach Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, for further assistance.
“The condition of the school demands immediate attention,” he said. “Every effort should be made to restore the institution to a conducive learning environment. We cannot afford to let this historic institution continue to decay.”
