oThe Federal Government given the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) board, led by President Ibrahim Gusau, 24 hours to resign following a string of disappointing results by the country’s national teams.
This is according to a report by Arise News on Thursday morning. The ultimatum comes amid growing criticism of the football federation over Nigeria’s recent failures on the international stage.
The report comes at a time of mounting pressure on the Gusau-led administration, particularly after the Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Nigeria’s women’s team, who entered the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations as defending champions, suffered a 1-0 quarter-final defeat to Cameroon. The result ended their hopes of retaining the continental title.
The Falcons subsequently faced South Africa in a World Cup qualification play-off and lost 2-1, meaning Nigeria will miss the Women’s World Cup for the first time since the competition began in 1991.
The latest setback followed the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Nigeria finished second in their qualifying group behind South Africa and subsequently reached the African play-off final, where they lost to DR Congo on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
The failure means the Super Eagles will miss the World Cup for a second consecutive edition, having also failed to make the 2022 tournament in Qatar.
Nigeria’s age-grade teams have also struggled. The Golden Eaglets failed to qualify for the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations, thereby missing the U-17 World Cup, despite Nigeria being the most successful nation in the history of the FIFA U-17 World Cup with five titles.
However, the reported 24-hour ultimatum from the Federal Government has not been independently confirmed through an official statement from the government or the NFF.
