Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has responded to Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone’s apology over his use of the Nigerian in an unfamiliar position at the start of the 2026/2027 season.
Lookman failed to score in Atletico Madrid’s opening two matches against Malaga and Villarreal. Simeone later apologised to the Nigerian for playing him as a centre-forward because Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth were unavailable.
However, Lookman returned to form on Saturday night, scoring in Atletico Madrid’s 3-1 victory over Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium.
The Nigerian played in his preferred left-wing position and opened his account for the season with a low shot into the bottom corner in the first half.
Speaking to ESPN after the match, Lookman said the team must continue to build on the positive result while also working to improve.
The 28-year-old also praised Simeone and his coaching staff, saying he was learning a lot under the Argentine manager.
“Playing under him is fantastic. I am gaining a lot of knowledge and working on my improvement. Learning from him and his team is crucial for my growth and for assisting the team,” Lookman said.
Lookman joined Atletico Madrid from Italian club Atalanta during the winter transfer window after a difficult first half of the season in Serie A.
Since arriving in Madrid, the Nigerian has made a strong impact, scoring goals and providing several assists.
His goal against Sevilla will give him more confidence as he looks to establish himself as an important player in Atletico Madrid’s attack this season.
Lookman will now hope to maintain his form and help Atletico Madrid challenge strongly throughout the 2026/2027 campaign.
