Former Super Eagles striker, Obafemi Martins has said Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Tinubu, could help bring positive changes to Nigerian football if given a role in the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
Martins made the comment on Monday while speaking with former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel on The Obi One Podcast.
The former Inter Milan striker was discussing the ongoing crisis in the NFF, which has recently witnessed resignations and changes among its top officials.
According to Martins, poor football administration has been a major problem in Nigeria for many years, including during his playing career.
The 41-year-old said the country needs a young person who understands football and the challenges facing Nigerians, adding that he believes Seyi Tinubu could be the person to help reform the system.
“I think Seyi Tinubu can do that too. He understands, he’s young, and he understands what Nigerian people want. I think he can change that,” Martins said.
Seyi Tinubu has not publicly expressed interest in contesting for any position within the NFF.
The comments came amid major changes in Nigerian football administration. Last week, NFF President Ibrahim Gusau resigned from his position, while the federation’s General Secretary, Muhammad Sanusi, also stepped down.
Their resignations were followed by a directive from President Bola Tinubu ordering a comprehensive reform of Nigerian football.
The directive was aimed at addressing the repeated failure of Nigeria’s national teams to qualify for major regional, continental and international competitions.
