African Democratic Congress, ADC, chieftain Dele Momodu has attributed Governor Ademola Adeleke’s victory in the Osun governorship election to his grassroots popularity and strong connection with voters.
Momodu also praised music star Davido for using social media to keep supporters informed during the August 15 election.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Momodu said Adeleke’s relationship with residents across the state gave him a significant advantage over his opponents.
“It was obvious that this man is a grassroots man, very down to earth, loves his people,” Momodu said.
“I have followed his trajectory with keen interest, so it was obvious to me that the people love him.”
He said Adeleke had also strengthened his standing by executing major projects across different parts of the state.
Momodu further credited Davido, Adeleke’s nephew, with helping to sustain public attention on developments during voting and collation.
“I’m happy with what Davido did with social media, making sure that they were aware. He was updating them regularly. I think that also saved the day,” he said.
The ADC chieftain, however, argued that the outcome also carried political implications for the All Progressives Congress, APC, ahead of the 2027 general election.
He claimed the APC campaign relied heavily on President Bola Tinubu’s political influence and described the Osun result as a warning that voters could choose candidates based on local considerations.
Momodu also alleged that there were concerns during the collation process, although he provided no evidence in the interview to substantiate claims of attempted manipulation.
President Tinubu had earlier congratulated Adeleke after the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, declared him winner of the election.
Adeleke polled 511,067 votes to defeat APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji, who scored 444,815 votes.
Najeem Salaam of the ADC finished third with 17,180 votes.
