Being the daughter of Africa’s richest businessman comes with obvious privileges, but Halima Dangote says she and her sisters have always focused on proving themselves through their work rather than relying on their family name.
Halima, Group Executive Director at Dangote Family Office and International Offices, said she, alongside her sisters Mariya and Fatima, deliberately maintained a low public profile while building their careers within the family business.
Speaking during a Bloomberg Next Africa interview with her sisters, Halima said the trio preferred to allow their professional achievements speak for them rather than draw attention to their background.
“Anytime we meet with our co-peers, like the kids of our dad’s friends…I mean everyone has his own job… we’re quiet in the sense that we don’t say who we are,” she said.
According to Halima, keeping a private lifestyle was easier before increased public recognition came with their growing responsibilities.
“I don’t know if it’s fortunate or unfortunate now people recognise us, but it was easier when we’re not recognised. Our results speak for itself,” she said.
The Dangote heiress said she and her sisters are not naturally drawn to displaying their wealth or personal lives publicly, unlike some personalities who use social media as a major part of their identity.
“Some people are really comfortable with the social media, with being known, with being expressive,” she said.
“I don’t think we are. All three of us were not expressive of what we have, what we own, what we’re doing.”
Halima said the sisters judge their impact through business performance, pointing to growth, profitability and other measurable results as proof of their contributions.
“The results are just the ones speaking for itself. The sale of this business, the profit of this, the EBITDA, our growth… numbers don’t lie,” she said.
She explained that their focus has remained on delivering results in their respective roles rather than seeking public validation.
The comments come as Halima, Mariya and Fatima continue to take on key responsibilities within the Dangote business empire, with each involved in different aspects of the family’s expanding interests.
The sisters have also previously spoken about the expectations that come with working in a family-owned company and the importance of building credibility beyond their surname.
For Halima, the Dangote name may open doors, but she believes performance and results determine how those opportunities are sustained.
