The Military Widows Association of Nigeria chapter in Kebbi State is split over its leadership following the election of new officials.
The former State Coordinator, Hajiya Asma’u Kanoma, rejected the new executives, saying the Nigerian Legion had no right to dissolve the existing leadership and hold elections without proper authority.
However, the Nigerian Legion’s state council rejected this claim, saying the election was carried out following orders from the national leadership.
The Legion’s State Chairman said the national body had called all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to Abuja to discuss restructuring these associations.
This meeting produced a directive to dissolve all state MIWA executives and hold fresh elections.
The Kebbi election took place on June 18, 2026, supervised by the Nigerian Legion and the state government.
The former MIWA leadership participated in the voting but lost to Hajiya Maryam Garba, who was elected as the new State Coordinator.
Aisha Sani-Ibrahim was elected Assistant Coordinator and Jummai Bango as Secretary.
The Legion chairman insisted there was no imposition of leaders and urged members to accept the election results.
Kanoma maintained that MIWA is an independent national association with its own constitution and that the Legion has no power to dissolve its executives or run elections for it.
She said the national MIWA leadership had written to the Legion chairman demanding the election be cancelled and the previous executive recognised.
Kanoma also asked the state government and other authorities to step in and settle the dispute.
The disagreement means the former leadership refuses to acknowledge the June 18 election while the newly elected officials have the backing of the Kebbi State Council of the Nigerian Legion.
