Manchester City have reached an agreement with Chelsea to sign Enzo Fernández for £125 million, with the Argentina international set to undergo a medical before completing one of the biggest transfers in Premier League history.
The agreement, reported by transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano and independently corroborated by other leading outlets, brings an end to weeks of uncertainty surrounding Fernández’s future at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea have approved the sale after lengthy negotiations, while the midfielder has made it clear that Manchester City is his preferred destination.
The £125 million package matches the British transfer record established by Liverpool when they signed Alexander Isak from Newcastle United last year.
The deal would also make Fernández the first player to be sold twice for more than £100 million.
Romano reported that Fernández is now scheduled to complete his medical in Manchester before the transfer can be formally concluded.
The 25-year-old joined Chelsea from Benfica in January 2023 for a then-British record £106.8 million. He subsequently became an important figure at Stamford Bridge, making 170 appearances and scoring 31 goals for the London club.
His departure follows an outstanding 2025/26 campaign in which he scored 15 goals and supplied seven assists across competitions. He was also a key member of Argentina’s 2026 World Cup squad.
Fernández’s move to Manchester will reunite him with Enzo Maresca, who previously coached him at Chelsea and is now in charge at City. The relationship between the pair has reportedly been an important factor in the midfielder’s desire to make the move.
For Manchester City, the signing represents another major investment in rebuilding their midfield. The club have already brought in Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi, while several established midfielders have departed during a major squad overhaul.
City’s summer spending is now approaching £400 million, underlining their determination to strengthen the squad after finishing second in the Premier League last season, seven points behind champions Arsenal.
