The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, management has reacted to the death of its former Director-General, Colonel Peter Kolawole Obasa.
Obasa passed away on Monday, September 28, 2026.
During a condolence visit to the residence of the deceased in Ilorin, Kwara State, the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu described the late Obasa as a pioneering administrator and one of the principal architects of the NYSC, emphasising that he laid the groundwork for a robust administrative framework that has sustained the Scheme over the decades.
He noted that Colonel Obasa’s service as the third Chief Executive of the NYSC, spanning from 1979 to 1984, achieved significant milestones.
The Director-General acknowledged the deceased’s invaluable contributions to the advancement of the NYSC and prayed to the Almighty to grant his soul eternal peace.
He said Colonel Obasa’s passing represented a profound loss not only to his immediate family but also to the NYSC, whose personnel would perpetually honour his substantial contributions and legacy.
General Nafiu specifically recognised the late Colonel Obasa for the mentorship and assistance he provided during his lifetime.
He pledged that the NYSC would continue to build on the strong foundation established by its founding fathers and endeavour to strengthen the Scheme further.
“I present the heartfelt condolences of the entire NYSC community to the Obasa family,” he stated.
Responding on behalf of the family, Mr Victor Obasa expressed gratitude to General Nafiu for the condolence visit, describing his father’s death as unexpected.
He expressed gratitude to the Almighty for the life of the late Colonel Obasa, as well as the distinguished legacy and lasting contributions he left behind.
“Our family is deeply moved, and we extend our appreciation to the NYSC for the respect you demonstrated towards our father. We are profoundly grateful for your continued remembrance of him,” he said.
