The White House has launched a 24-hour digital streaming channel called “Trump TV: The Essentials Station” amid a growing dispute between President Donald Trump’s administration and major US news organisations.
The channel went live on Monday through the White House’s official YouTube channel and website.
According to the White House, the platform will show “top videos, major remarks, and must-see highlights” from the Trump administration. The content will be streamed throughout the day and updated regularly.
Trump TV is not a traditional television network. It is a government-run digital channel that broadcasts selected footage of President Trump and members of his administration, including speeches, announcements and other public events.
Its early programmes included Trump’s July 3 speech at Mount Rushmore and footage from his January 2025 inauguration.
The launch came on the same day CNN, MS NOW and Politico filed a federal lawsuit against the Trump administration over restrictions placed on their journalists’ access to the White House.
The three organisations said the restrictions violate their First Amendment rights and asked a federal judge to restore their access. A hearing on their request was scheduled for Wednesday.
Trump announced the restrictions on Friday, accusing the organisations of publishing what he called “fake news”. His administration has argued that although the First Amendment protects press freedom, it does not give individual news organisations an automatic right to access the White House.
US TV networks suspend traditional pool coverage
The dispute has also affected the traditional White House television pool. Under the system, ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox and NBC take turns filming presidential events and share the footage with other broadcasters.
CNN was scheduled to provide the pool coverage on Monday. However, the other four networks declined to take over after CNN was barred from the White House.
In a joint statement, the five networks said the public has an important interest in receiving accurate and independent information about the government. They also said no administration should restrict a news organisation because of its reporting.
As a result, there was no traditional television pool coverage for several presidential events on Monday, including the unveiling of a new helipad at the White House.
The White House used its own video feed for the helipad event. However, viewers had difficulty hearing Trump’s remarks because of the noise from a helicopter.
Trump defends restrictions
Trump has defended his decision, accusing the affected news organisations of biased or inaccurate reporting.
Vice President JD Vance also defended the restrictions. He said the organisations could continue reporting on the administration but would no longer have access to offices and facilities inside the White House.
Trump has had a long-running dispute with parts of the US media and has repeatedly accused some news organisations of unfair coverage of his administration.
The latest dispute has now led to a legal challenge and the suspension of the traditional television pool used to provide shared footage of presidential events.
The launch of Trump TV gives the White House a direct platform to distribute its own footage and administration messages without relying on the traditional television networks.
The White House has promoted the channel as a platform bringing together the administration’s major events. Critics, however, have described it as an attempt to create a government-controlled alternative to independent news coverage.
