The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Patrick Daaor, has ordered a discreet investigation into a viral video showing a face-off between officials of the Edo State Traffic Management Agency (EDSTMA) and operatives of the Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT).
The Command’s spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday morning.
The video, which has been trending online, captured an IRT officer firing his rifle into the air during the confrontation.
The statement said CP Daaor had met with representatives of both agencies and disclosed that a probe had been launched to unravel the circumstances that led to the altercation.
The CP also directed that the officer seen firing the weapon be subjected to an immediate disciplinary review.
“The Command will not tolerate indiscipline, unprofessional conduct or abuse of police powers by any personnel.
“Any officer found culpable at the end of investigation, regardless of agency, will face appropriate sanctions in line with the law,” CP Daaor said.
The CP, who emphasised that inter-agency collaboration and mutual respect were critical to effective public safety, said the matter was being handled seriously but “without prejudice to the existing working relationship between the Police Command and EDSTMA.”
He urged residents to avoid jungle justice and channel complaints of misconduct to the Complaint Response Unit through its dedicated lines.
Daaor also reiterated the Command’s commitment to professionalism, discipline and upholding the rule of law.
