Where does your Data go? How to track what your phone is using

For millions of Nigerians, checking a data balance has become a routine part of using a mobile phone. The more important figure, however, is often not how much data remains, but how much has already been consumed and what consumed it.

Nigeria had more than 157 million active internet subscriptions as of May 2026, with mobile GSM accounting for more than 157 million of them, according to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

As data consumption continues to rise, understanding a phone’s data-usage report can help subscribers identify the applications and services responsible for rapid depletion.

Start with the Usage Period

The first figure to check is the period covered by the phone’s data report.
On most Android devices, data usage can be found under Settings, usually through Network and Internet, Connections or Data Usage, depending on the manufacturer.
On an iPhone, it is generally found under Settings and Mobile Data or Cellular.
The usage period should correspond as closely as possible with the period covered by the subscriber’s current data bundle.

A mismatch can make the figures appear inconsistent. A phone may be counting from the beginning of the month while the subscriber purchased a data bundle several days later.
For a meaningful comparison, the data-usage counter should be aligned with the date on which the bundle became active.

Identify the Biggest Consumers

The application list provides the clearest indication of where data is going.
Video platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and Netflix can appear prominently because video files are relatively large and consumption increases with picture quality.

A subscriber who spends several hours streaming video should therefore expect those applications to account for a significant proportion of total usage.

The important question is whether the volume recorded against an application corresponds with how often it has been used.

A large data figure beside YouTube is not, by itself, evidence of abnormal consumption. A large figure beside an application that has barely been used may warrant closer examination.

Check Background Data

Some applications consume data even when they are not open on the screen.
Background activity may include synchronising email, refreshing social-media feeds, checking for new content, downloading files, updating location information and communicating with cloud services.
The distinction between foreground and background usage is therefore important.
An application that has consumed 500MB while being actively used for several hours is different from an application that has consumed the same amount largely through background activity.
Android and iOS allow users to restrict mobile-data access for individual applications. Non-essential applications can be prevented from using mobile data in the background without necessarily removing the applications from the phone.

Examine Cloud Backups

Cloud services can be another significant source of consumption.
Google Photos, iCloud and similar services can automatically upload photographs and videos. A single video recorded on a smartphone can be considerably larger than an ordinary photograph, particularly when recorded at high resolution.

Subscribers who allow cloud services to use mobile data may therefore see substantial consumption without actively opening the backup application.

Where Wi-Fi is regularly available, restricting large backups to Wi-Fi can reduce mobile-data consumption.

Check WhatsApp

WhatsApp can account for considerable data usage on phones with many active conversations and groups.

Images, videos, documents, GIFs and other media can be downloaded automatically, depending on the application’s settings.

The WhatsApp Storage and Data section allows users to examine network usage and determine how media is downloaded.

Restricting automatic downloads when using mobile data means that messages can continue to arrive while large media files are not automatically downloaded over the subscriber’s data bundle.

Look Closely at Video Quality

Streaming quality has a direct effect on data consumption.
High-definition and higher-resolution video generally require more data than lower-resolution video.
Some applications are also configured to adjust quality according to network conditions. A faster connection can therefore make high-quality streaming more readily available.

This creates a common misconception: better network performance does not necessarily mean that a data bundle will last longer.

Subscribers who are trying to reduce consumption should check the mobile-data settings of their major streaming and social-media applications and select lower-quality or data-saving options where appropriate.

Check Automatic Updates

Application updates can also consume mobile data without the subscriber deliberately opening an application.

A phone with dozens of installed applications can have several updates pending at the same time.
Application-store settings generally allow users to determine whether updates can take place over mobile data or only when connected to Wi-Fi.

Restricting automatic updates to Wi-Fi can prevent unexpected consumption, particularly when large software updates are released.

Do Not Ignore System Services

Some phones display a category such as System, System Services or Operating System in their data-usage reports.

This does not automatically mean that data has been consumed improperly.
The category can include legitimate system activity, software services and other functions required to keep the device operating.

However, an unusually high figure deserves attention. Software updates, cloud synchronisation, hotspot activity and other device-level services should be checked before drawing conclusions about unexplained consumption.

Check the Hotspot

Mobile hotspots can make a phone’s data disappear quickly because other devices may be using the connection.

A connected laptop, tablet, television or another smartphone can consume data through software updates, video streaming, cloud synchronisation or large downloads.

Subscribers who regularly use hotspot services should check which devices are connected and what those devices are doing online.

Compare the Phone With the Network

A phone’s data-usage report and an operator’s usage record are not necessarily identical measurements.
The phone records the mobile data used by the device. The network operator records usage on its network.

Differences can occur because the two systems may use different measurement periods or categories.
The most useful comparison is therefore one covering the same period.

Subscribers can note the date and size of a newly purchased bundle, monitor the phone’s data report during the validity period and then compare the result with the information provided by the network operator.

Use the Operators’ Data Tools

The major network operators have also introduced customer tools aimed at improving visibility into data consumption.

Airtel provides data-management and account information through its self-care services, allowing subscribers to monitor their data position and manage their accounts.

Globacom’s Glo Café provides subscribers with account and data-management functions, while the company also provides guidance on managing data consumption.

MTN has gone further with its Data Usage Portal, which provides visibility into data consumption across applications and services. The company said the portal was independently validated by KPMG, with the assessment examining whether information displayed to customers corresponded with records generated by MTN’s charging systems.

These tools do not replace the phone’s own data-usage report. The two provide different perspectives: the operator shows what has been recorded on the network, while the phone can show which applications and services are responsible for consumption on the device.

What to Check When Data Runs Out Quickly

When a data bundle appears to be depleting faster than expected, the first checks should be straightforward.
Check the usage period.
Look at the applications with the highest consumption.
Separate foreground use from background activity.
Check video-streaming quality.
Review WhatsApp’s media-download settings.
Check cloud backup and automatic application updates.
Review hotspot connections.
Then compare the phone’s record with the operator’s usage information.
