Jigawa police arrest two over alleged vandalism of electricity installations

The Command’s spokesperson, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, disclosed this in a statement issued to newsmen.

He said the suspects were arrested in separate incidents involving the vandalism of a streetlight cable and an electricity transformer.

According to him, Aminu Musa, 38, of New Gwaram Town, was arrested at about 1:00 am on September 25, 2026, while allegedly cutting the armoured cable of a streetlight in the area.

He explained that the suspect, who worked as a streetlight generator operator, was taken to the police station, while exhibits recovered from the scene were retained as evidence.

In a separate incident, the police arrested Laminu Sha’aibu, 26, of Gumusuwa Village in Kafin Hausa Local Government Area, for allegedly vandalising an electricity transformer at Maskangayu Village in Auyo LGA.

Shiisu said the suspect was apprehended on September 29, 2026, after residents reportedly found him in possession of vandalised transformer coils.

He explained that police operatives rushed to the scene after receiving information that an angry mob was about to attack the suspect.

“The suspect was rescued and taken to the nearest Primary Health Centre for medical attention, where he was treated and subsequently discharged,” he said.

The police spokesperson further disclosed that during interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to spending three nights dismantling the transformer without being detected.

He said investigations were conducted to establish the circumstances surrounding the incidents and determine whether other individuals were involved.

According to him, both suspects have been charged to court.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Tijjani Murtala, commended residents for providing timely information that led to the arrests.

He urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, particularly those involving electricity installations, streetlights and other public facilities.

The commissioner also assured residents of the Command’s commitment to protecting public infrastructure and ensuring that those involved in vandalism face the law.
