Nigeria @66: There is still much to be done — Gov Okpebholo

As Nigeria celebrates 66 years of nationhood, Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has said there is still much to be done as a nation, stressing that the gains so far recorded are foundations to build on and not a finished job.

Okpebholo stated this in his message to Nigerians to mark the 66th Independence Anniversary on October 1, 2026.

The governor, who commended Edo residents for their patience, opined that the government exists to serve the people and keep listening, even when the feedback is uncomfortable.

While expressing gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his efforts to reposition Nigeria for greatness, the governor added that the Renewed Hope Agenda of the President is a necessary decision for national revival.

He claimed that the agenda had already moved the nation towards economic stability and growth.

He, however, urged citizens to use the 66th Independence Anniversary to recommit to peace and unity, stressing that true patriotism is reflected in how citizens treat one another and protect public assets.

Meanwhile, the governor assured Edo residents of his administration’s commitment to the continued protection of their lives and property.

According to him, security remained his administration’s first responsibility, adding that farming, trade, investment and every other economic activity depend on peace.

“We have worked hard to make Edo safer. We are rebuilding our roads, upgrading our schools and hospitals, and creating opportunities for our teeming youths.

He further assured that the administration would continue to work with all security agencies, as well as traditional rulers, community leaders and key partners, given their closeness to the people and knowledge of the local terrain.

He warned those who might attempt to disturb the peace of the state, saying that Edo is not a safe place for criminals.

The governor, however, wished Edo people a peaceful celebration and prayed for the continued progress of the state and the nation.
