The immediate past President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Reverend Samson Olasupo Ayokunle, has advised the federal government to urgently take necessary steps to address hunger, insecurity and inflation in the country.
He explained that the removal of the subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit has increased hunger and the cost of living across the country.
He made the call while speaking with journalists in Ibadan at an event.
Ayokunle noted that the removal of the subsidy on petrol has compounded the woes of Nigerians and that the country needs determined leaders who are not complacent about tackling insecurity and other social problems.
He said it was now difficult for Nigerians to breathe economically, charging President Bola Tinubu to take necessary actions to address the problems facing many Nigerians.
He added that with more resources available to the government, it is expected that the government will perform better in the area of providing quality education to the people.
Ayokunle said, “The solution is a more determined leadership. When the leaders are no longer complicit in insecurity, a time when Nigerians will breathe a sigh of relief. Well, I am not his assessor. The masses are his assessors. But let us speak the truth. There is hunger in the land; the cost of living is too high. Well, it is good that the subsidy was removed, but what is the average earning today in Nigeria? When we remove the subsidy, as is removed elsewhere in other countries that produce oil, do we pay the same salary?
“Do we pay the minimum wage that is paid in the US or United Kingdom or elsewhere? What we are paying now, with the complications of the devaluation of the naira has thrown the workers into abject poverty. It is very difficult for Nigerians now to breathe economically, and that is what a serious government, a government that will not play politics with the life of people, must address.
“So, with more resources available to the government, we expect the government to perform better in the provision of quality education, not only sending the money, but monitoring the money that is sent to education to see that it is used for what it is meant to be used for.
“Concerning 2027, what God revealed to me is that whatsoever happens to this nation, Nigeria will still survive. That His will alone will manifest. In fact, that is why we have to believe in Nigeria. Anyone who has given up is not supposed to be in this country.”
