Nigeria’s Chukwuebuka Enekwechi made history on Thursday by becoming the first Nigerian athlete to win the men’s shot put title at the Commonwealth Games, clinching a long-awaited gold medal.
The triumph sparked emotional celebrations among his national teammates, Sade Olatoye, Divine Oladipo and Adaobi Tagbugbo, who erupted in joy after realizing Enekwechi had secured the historic victory.

Reacting to the achievement, athletics platform Making of Champions described the victory as a breakthrough that had been years in the making.
“FIRST NIGERIAN ATHLETE to win a Commonwealth Games title in Men’s Shot Put. It’s been a long time coming, but Chukwuebuka Enekwechi finally has his moment in the sun. The only way from here is UP for Big Chuks!” the platform posted.
Enekwechi‘s victory adds another gold medal to Nigeria’s athletics campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games and further cements his place among the country’s greatest field athletes.
His triumph is also expected to inspire a new generation of Nigerian throwers aiming to excel on the international stage.
