Former Bayelsa State Governor and ex-Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress, APC, with immediate effect.
Sylva announced his resignation in a letter dated August 31, 2026, addressed to the APC Chairman of Ward 4 in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
The former governor, who described himself as a founding member of the ruling party, said he reached the decision after consultations with his family, associates, colleagues and supporters.
“Having consulted widely with my family, associates, colleagues and sympathisers, I wish to formally tender my resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC), with immediate effect,” Sylva wrote.
He accused the APC of abandoning the principles upon which it was founded, saying he could no longer remain in the party.
Sylva recalled his role in the formation and development of the APC but criticised the party’s current leadership, alleging that its approach to politics had eroded basic standards of decency and morality.
His resignation comes amid legal and political controversies surrounding him.
Sylva was declared wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, in November 2025 over an alleged conspiracy and dishonest conversion of $14,859,257 belonging to the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, NCDMB.
The funds were allegedly connected to a refinery project being developed by Atlantic International Refinery and Petrochemical Limited.
The former minister has also been linked in reports to an alleged coup plot against President Bola Tinubu’s administration. The allegation has not been established as fact in the information provided.
