The Nigerian Association of Medical and Dental Academics, NAMDA, says it has concluded plans to embark on a three day warning strike on Tuesday, September 1, 2026 across medical schools in the country.
The acting National Secretary General of the association, Prof. Aniekan Peter, in a statement made available to journalists in Uyo on Wednesday, said the decision was taken at the end of the National Emergency Council meeting.
Peter regretted that despite the dearth of medical lecturers and the worsening ‘Japa syndrome’, the Federal Government appears to have continued to ignore the legitimate concerns of medical lecturers.
The body described as antithetical the wish of the Federal Government to mass produce medical doctors without prioritizing the welfare of lecturers who train the medical students.
The association also decried the Federal Government’s inability to conclude negotiations on the conditions of service of medical lecturers and to formally document the payment of medical lecturers under the CONMESS salary structure.
The statement listed other grievances to include non-payment of MCATA, non-payment of EAA and non-payment of excess workload allowance even as it called on the Federal Government to urgently address the issues.
Parts of the statement read, ”The warning strike is scheduled to commence Tuesday next week and will be total and comprehensive across medical schools in the country.
”At a time when the country is already experiencing a severe shortage of medical lecturers, it is unfortunate that the Government is allowing these avoidable issues to escalate.”
The association therefore called on the Federal Government to listen, return to the negotiating table and resolve the issues ‘
“before the warning strike becomes inevitable”.
