Former Kaduna Central senator Shehu Sani has defended Governor Ademola Adeleke for thanking President Bola Tinubu following his victory in the Osun governorship election.

Sani said some opposition members were unhappy with Adeleke because they expected the governor to adopt a confrontational stance towards the President.

Writing on X, the former lawmaker argued that Adeleke’s appreciation followed what he described as Tinubu’s role in protecting the governor’s mandate and preventing alleged attempts to interfere with it.

According to Sani, Adeleke would not have publicly expressed such gratitude if the President had not been helpful in safeguarding the election outcome.

He maintained that electoral victory involved two crucial stages: winning the majority of votes and ensuring that the votes were protected through collation until a winner was declared.

Sani noted that several Nigerian politicians had won at the polling stage but eventually lost because they failed to protect their votes during collation.

Adeleke defeated APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji after polling 511,067 votes against Oyebamiji’s 444,815 votes.

The governor subsequently thanked Tinubu and other stakeholders for their roles in ensuring the people’s mandate prevailed.
