The African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has criticised Nigerian politicians who rely on political godfathers, wealthy backers and existing parties to pursue their ambitions ahead of the 2027 general election.
Sowore, in a statement shared on his social media page, questioned why politicians who claim to have strong support among Nigerians often move between political platforms instead of building their own political movements.
The AAC candidate said many politicians were more interested in using established structures and influence networks rather than developing independent platforms supported by ordinary citizens.
He argued that genuine political strength should be demonstrated through grassroots mobilisation, organisation and the ability to build lasting movements.
“If their ideas are so compelling, let them organize. If their platforms are so popular, let them mobilize. If their politics is so powerful, let them build,” Sowore said.
Defending the AAC, Sowore said the party was built through the commitment, sacrifice and contributions of its members rather than through the backing of wealthy individuals or political elites.
He accused some politicians of attempting to persuade supporters to abandon platforms they helped build and follow new political alliances created around individual ambitions.
According to him, politicians who believe in their ideas should be willing to create and sustain their own structures instead of relying on parties established by others.
“We built ours with our sweat and blood. Let them build theirs,” he said.
Sowore’s comments come amid increased political realignments ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with several politicians exploring new alliances and platforms as parties begin positioning themselves for the contest.
