All may not be well in the political camp o the Deputy Senate President, Dr. Barau I. Jibrin, following recent unfoldings in his Kano North Senatorial District, witnessing the cross-carpeting of his key supporters and political mobilizers from the All Progressive Congress (APC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Senator Barau Jibrin is seeking a return to the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly in the 2027 general elections.
Political watchers have been amazed over recent dwindling of his political limelight within his Senatorial district, following covert and overt political rigmarole, engaged by his well known staunch supporters, who seem to have abandoned the Deputy Senate President’s political lineage for the kwankwasiyya Political Movement and the opposition NDC.
Their subtle moves have been defined by fresh political realignments which shook the political atmosphere of Kano North Senatorial District, after Senator Barau Jibrin’s influential grassroot mobiliser, Mustapha Yahaya Shuwaki and hundreds of his supporters announced their defection from his political camp, to the NDC, as hinted by Shuwaki’s loyalists.
Speaking during the defection gathering, Shuwaki declared that the decision followed broad consultations with supporters, community leaders and political associates across Kano North, insisting that their action was driven by the aspirations of the people.
“Our commitment is to serve the people who entrusted us with leadership. After extensive consultations, we resolved to identify with a platform that reflects their collective interest,” he said.
NDC local leaders who welcomed the defectors, described the move as evidence of what they described as, “a growing political shift across Kano North,” arguing that more grassroot blocs were aligning with the party ahead of 2027 election circle.
However, APC stalwart, Ibrahim Sani, agreed that the exit of influential grassroot figures from Senator Barau Jibrin’s camp is capable of posing serious challenges for the APC in Kano North Senatorial District, if internal grievances are not promptly addressed.
“The symbolism is significant because it happened almost immediately after a celebrated reception. It raises questions about internal reconciliation and the durability of political alliances,” Sani noted.
Our Correspondent reports that Senator Barau I. Jibrin who started his journey to National Assembly as a House of Representatives member in 1999, climbed to the Upper Chamber in 2015, from where he rose to the coveted position of Deputy Senate President.
