Kayinsola Ajayi and Ezekiel Nathaniel have secured automatic qualification for the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing, China.
Three Nigerian relay teams have also booked their places for the competition after strong performances during the 2026 athletics season.
Amusan secured her place in the women’s 100m hurdles after recording a series of impressive times throughout the season.
The Nigerian sprint hurdler ended her 2026 campaign at the Athlos meeting at StoneX Stadium in London, where she finished second in a season best time of 12.51 seconds.
She finished just 0.01 seconds behind American Alaysha Johnson in a highly competitive race.
Amusan’s consistent performances, including several sub 12.60 seconds runs, helped her meet the automatic qualifying standard for the 2027 World Championships.
Ajayi also secured his place in Beijing after an impressive season in the men’s 100m.
The 21 year old sprinter won the London Diamond League 100m race in 9.84 seconds, matching his own Nigerian national record.
He defeated Jamaica’s world champion Oblique Seville, who finished in 9.87 seconds, while Britain’s Romell Glave came third in 9.97 seconds.
Ajayi also won the NCAA Outdoor title and recorded several sub 10 second times during the season, earning automatic qualification for the World Championships.
Ezekiel Nathaniel also secured his place in the men’s 400m hurdles.
Nathaniel produced a lifetime best of 47.11 seconds during the season and continued to establish himself among the leading athletes in the event.
His strong performances throughout the year earned him an automatic ticket to Beijing.
Three Nigerian relay teams qualify
Nigeria also secured qualification in three relay events at the World Athletics Relays in Gaborone, Botswana.
The women’s 4x100m relay team recorded a time of 42.94 seconds to secure qualification for Beijing.
Nigeria’s mixed 4x100m relay team also booked its place after running an African record of 40.24 seconds.
The team featured Favour Ashe, Jennifer Obi Chukwuka, Chidera Ezeakor and Maria Thompson Omokwe.
The mixed 4x400m relay team also secured qualification. The squad included Chidi Okezie, Ezekiel Nathaniel, Taiwo Mary Kudoro and Patience Okon George.
The performances mean Nigeria already has three individual athletes and three relay teams qualified for the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing.
