Nigerian winger David Akintola has left Hull City after the club confirmed the termination of his contract, ending his time at the English club without making a Premier League appearance.
The 30 year old has now completed a permanent move to Cypriot club Omonoia FC after Hull agreed to mutually terminate his contract.
Akintola joined Hull City in August 2025 after leaving Turkish side Çaykur Rizespor. The move gave him an opportunity to play in England after spells with clubs in Denmark, Norway, Cyprus and Turkey.
However, his time at Hull did not go as planned.
The Nigerian made 20 Championship appearances during his first season, with most of his opportunities coming from the bench. He scored one goal and provided two assists.
His only goal came in October when he helped Hull secure a 1-0 victory over Sheffield United.
Akintola’s last appearance for the club came on January 24, when he was introduced as a substitute in Hull’s 2-1 win over Swansea City.
He was subsequently left out of the club’s registered squad for the remainder of the season.
Hull later tried to bring him back into the squad after injuries affected the team. The English Football League initially rejected the request, but the club was eventually allowed to register Akintola again after Eliot Matazo suffered a serious knee injury.
The decision meant Akintola could be part of Hull’s squad for the Championship play-off final against Middlesbrough.
Hull won the final 1-0 at Wembley on May 23, with Oli McBurnie scoring the decisive goal in the 95th minute. The victory secured the club’s return to the Premier League after a nine year absence.
Despite being part of the promotion campaign, Akintola did not feature in the play-off final.
Hull’s promotion appeared to offer the Nigerian another opportunity to finally play in the Premier League. However, the club brought in several attacking players during the summer as manager Sergej Jakirović prepared the squad for the new season.
Although Akintola was initially registered for the 2026/27 campaign, his future at Hull remained uncertain.
The club has now confirmed that his contract has been terminated by mutual agreement to allow him to complete his move to Omonoia FC.
Akintola therefore leaves England without making his Premier League debut, bringing an unexpected end to what had initially looked like a promising opportunity to reach the top level of English football.
