The Federal Government has paid the naira equivalent of $100,000 to each player of Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket.
The National Sports Commission also confirmed that each official of the team received the naira equivalent of $50,000.
The payments were made on September 9, 2026, with the NSC saying all the players and officials had confirmed receiving the money.
D’Tigress won the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket title, securing their fifth consecutive championship and seventh title overall.
The NSC said the payment completed all the rewards promised to the team by President Bola Tinubu after their historic achievement.
In a statement signed by its Director of Information and Public Relations, Kehinde Ajayi, the commission said the presidential rewards included three bedroom flats in Abuja, national honours of the Order of the Niger and cash payments.
“With the payment, the entire presidential rewards promised to each member of the team by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR comprising a three bedroom flat in Abuja, national honours of OON and naira equivalent of $100,000 to players and $50,000 to officials have been fully redeemed and completed,” the statement said.
The commission said the players and officials received the title documents for their three bedroom apartments and certificates of national honours in February 2026 during the FIBA World Cup qualifiers in Lyon, France.
According to the NSC, the documents were signed by President Tinubu.
The cash payment was made after the team participated in the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Germany.
The commission also said the Super Falcons, Nigeria’s senior women’s football team, had received their title documents for three bedroom apartments in Abuja and certificates of national honours.
The Falcons received the documents during the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. The NSC said their cash rewards were expected to be paid before their next official engagements.
Like D’Tigress, each Super Falcons player is expected to receive the naira equivalent of $100,000, while each official will receive $50,000.
The NSC said the rewards were part of the Federal Government’s efforts to improve the welfare of Nigerian athletes and properly recognise their achievements.
The commission also thanked President Tinubu and other government officials involved in implementing the rewards, saying their cooperation helped ensure that the promised benefits were delivered within the required government procedures.
