A schoolchild is missing after floods hit Anambra State.
Seven other schoolchildren and two adults were rescued on the Nibo-Isiagu Road in Awka South on Tuesday morning.
Heavy rainfall on Monday and Tuesday caused the flooding.
Schoolchildren and adults were caught in the flood while travelling on the affected route early Tuesday.
Safe School Operatives quickly mobilised to the area.
Working with community members, they rescued seven schoolchildren and two adults and moved them to safety.
One child involved is still unaccounted for.
Police have started sustained search and rescue operations in the area with community members and other stakeholders.
The state Commissioner of Police has directed the search operation be sustained and expanded.
He urged residents around the affected route to provide any information that could help locate the missing child.
Parents, guardians and school authorities are being advised to exercise caution around flooded roads, bridges and waterways during heavy rainfall.
Children should not attempt to cross flooded or dangerous routes.
The police remain committed to protecting schoolchildren and will strengthen collaboration with communities and agencies under the Safe School Initiative to prevent loss of life during emergencies.
