The 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Peter Obi, has denied authoring a letter circulating on social media, purportedly addressed to the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe, over political and financial matters in Anambra State.
Obi, in a statement he issued personally via his handle, described the letter as fake, malicious and a fabrication intended to mislead the public.
He said, “My attention has been drawn to a fake letter circulating on social media, purportedly written by me to His Majesty, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha, concerning political and financial matters in Anambra State.
“This document is entirely false, malicious, and a fabrication by mischievous elements aimed at misleading the public. Furthermore, the signature appended to the letter is completely forged.
“I urge the public and media to disregard this spurious publication. My focus remains steadfastly on issues of national development, accountability, and building a better future for our people – never on cheap fabrications.”
The purported letter, dated September 19, 2026, and titled “The Future of Ndigbo is Bleak,” addressed the Onitsha monarch on issues surrounding the administration of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, Obi’s tenure as governor and questions concerning Anambra State’s financial records and liabilities.
The letter called for transparency and accountability, urging that relevant financial records be made available for examination and that legitimate questions be answered with evidence.
It also appealed to traditional institutions, political leaders and elders to encourage unity and prevent political disagreements from creating divisions among the Igbo people.
The purported letter was signed in Obi’s name and identified him as a former Anambra State governor and NDC presidential candidate.
However, Obi has disowned the document, insisting that he did not write it.
