Sardauna Local Government Council in Taraba State has warned against spreading unverified information on social media following a recent breach of peace in Mbara Village.
Council Chairman Mohammed Jirji Umar said people are circulating false stories, inciting videos, old photographs and exaggerated reports about the incident.
These activities undermine efforts by the government, security agencies and traditional rulers to restore peace.
The council said it will no longer tolerate content that worsens the situation.
Security agencies are deployed in the area and normalcy is gradually returning.
Dialogue is ongoing among stakeholders to resolve the crisis.
The chairman issued a final warning to individuals, groups and bloggers to stop publishing or sharing unverified, inciting or misleading materials.
Anyone caught will be tracked, arrested and prosecuted under the Cybercrimes Act 2015 and other laws relating to criminal defamation, incitement and breach of public peace.
The council urged residents to disregard fake news and get information through official channels.
It called on the public to use social media responsibly and report suspicious online activities to security agencies.
The council asked residents to use social media to promote peace and reconciliation rather than escalate tensions in the local government.
