Sokoto Assembly passes bill on establishment of state police

The Speaker of the House, Tukur Bala Bodinga, confirmed the development to journalists on Tuesday, saying lawmakers passed the bill during plenary.

“Yes, we have passed the bill today. You will see the statement any moment from now,” Bodinga said.

The passage comes amid calls for reforms to Nigeria’s security architecture, particularly in the North-West, where banditry and kidnapping continue to threaten lives and property.

The bill forms part of the ongoing constitutional amendment process to establish state police.

The National Assembly had earlier forwarded the proposal to state legislatures for consideration.

The Sokoto Assembly is expected to provide further details in an official statement.
