Zenith Bank Leads NGX Trading With N6.5 Billion Turnover

Zenith Bank Plc emerged as the most actively traded stock on the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) by both volume and value among the leading equities on Thursday as investors exchanged 47.80 million shares worth N6.50 billion.

Trading data showed that 47,799,206 Zenith Bank shares valued at N6.499 billion changed hands during the session, placing the lender ahead of Wema Bank, Access Holdings, FCMB Group and Multitrex Industries.

Zenith Bank’s N6.499 billion turnover represented approximately 17.1 percent of the N38.02 billion total transaction value recorded across the equities market during the session.

This means roughly N17 out of every N100 traded on the NGX on Thursday was accounted for by transactions in Zenith Bank shares.

The concentration in Zenith Bank came during a session in which investors exchanged a total of 492.23 million shares valued at N38.02 billion across 38,711 deals.

Wema Bank followed Zenith Bank by volume, recording 43.64 million shares worth N1.35 billion, while Access Holdings accounted for 42.94 million shares valued at N1.27 billion.

FCMB Group recorded 32.67 million shares worth N357.46 million, while Multitrex Industries completed the five most actively traded stocks supplied for the session with 27.20 million shares valued at N11.42 million.

Together, the five equities accounted for approximately 194.25 million shares, equivalent to about 39.5 percent of the total 492.23 million shares traded on the NGX.

However, Zenith Bank stood significantly ahead of the other volume leaders when measured by transaction value.

Its N6.499 billion turnover was nearly five times Wema Bank’s N1.35 billion and more than five times the N1.27 billion recorded in Access Holdings shares.

The heavy activity in Zenith Bank also came amid a weak broader market.

The NGX All-Share Index declined 0.82 percent to 248,042.50 points, while equity market capitalisation closed at N161.052 trillion.

Despite the broader selloff, the volume and value of transactions in Zenith Bank placed the lender at the centre of Thursday’s trading activity with the stock alone accounting for more than 17 percent of total market turnover.
