Arsenal began their Premier League title defence in commanding fashion on Friday, sweeping aside newly promoted Coventry City 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium to make an emphatic statement on the opening night of the new campaign.
Mikel Arteta’s side wasted little time asserting their authority, taking the lead in the 15th minute when Kai Havertz curled a shot into the bottom-right corner after being picked out by Riccardo Calafiori.
Arsenal doubled their advantage eight minutes later through Bukayo Saka, who reacted quickest to a rebound inside the Coventry box and fired the ball into the net to make it 2-0.
The hosts carried their two-goal advantage into the interval and continued to dominate after the restart, with Coventry struggling to contain Arsenal’s attacking threat.
The third goal arrived four minutes into the second half. Martin Odegaard finished clinically from close range after Ben White’s excellent through ball released him in front of goal, putting Arsenal firmly in control at 3-0.
Coventry, back in the Premier League, found opportunities difficult to come by as Arsenal’s defence maintained a clean sheet.
Arsenal continued to create chances in the second half, with Calafiori denied in a one-on-one situation by Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, while Christos Tzolis also saw an effort saved.
Arteta used the comfortable advantage to rotate his squad, bringing on Noni Madueke, Martin Zubimendi, Mikel Merino and Eberechi Eze during the second half.
Coventry, managed by Frank Lampard, made changes of their own as they attempted to find a route back into the contest, but Arsenal remained in control until the final whistle.
The result gives Arsenal an ideal start to their campaign as they seek to defend their Premier League crown, while Coventry’s return to the top flight began with a difficult examination against one of the division’s leading sides.
