Nigeria has congratulated Bangladesh on electing a new president, calling it an important moment in the country’s democratic progress.
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was chosen by Bangladesh’s parliament on Thursday, winning 255 votes compared to 88 votes for his rival, a retired military officer.
This was the first contested presidential election Bangladesh has held in 35 years.
Nigeria’s foreign affairs minister announced the congratulations on social media on behalf of the Nigerian government, praising both Bangladesh and its people for conducting the election peacefully.
The Nigerian government said it believes Alamgir will provide strong leadership focused on bringing people together, keeping the country stable, and supporting development.
Nigeria and Bangladesh have a friendly relationship based on mutual respect and shared goals.
Both countries are part of the Global South and work together on matters like development, economic growth, food and energy security, and fighting climate change.
Nigeria said it wants to work more closely with Bangladesh on trade, farming, medicine, education, technology, healthcare, and cultural exchanges.
Nigeria also recognized the role Bangladesh plays in regional and world affairs.
The country reaffirmed its willingness to cooperate with Bangladesh through international organizations like the United Nations and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.
As Alamgir prepares to take office, Nigeria wished him wisdom, good health, and success.
The Nigerian government expressed hope that his leadership will bring continued peace, stability, and development to Bangladesh.
Other countries, including China, the United Kingdom, France, and Switzerland, have also congratulated Alamgir and expressed interest in working with his new administration.
