The All Progressives Congress (APC) has defeated the Accord Party at the polling unit of former Osun State Governor and founding interim National Chairman of the APC, Chief Bisi Akande, in Saturday’s governorship election.
The APC governorship candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, secured 181 votes at Polling Unit 12, Ward 4, in the Atogbade area of Ila-Orangun, Ila Local Government Area, where Akande cast his ballot earlier in the day.
Incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke, who is seeking re-election on the platform of the Accord Party, polled 121 votes at the polling unit.
The result gives Oyebamiji a 60-vote lead over Adeleke at the former governor’s polling unit.
Akande, fondly known among his political allies and supporters as “Baba Omokeekeeke,” meaning “father of small children,” was governor of Osun State from 1999 to 2003 on the platform of the Alliance for Democracy (AD).
He later emerged as the founding interim National Chairman of the APC, one of Nigeria’s major political parties.
The outcome at his polling unit is significant given Akande’s long-standing influence in Osun politics and his prominent role in the APC.
The result comes as counting and collation continue across the state following the conclusion of voting in the Osun governorship election.
