Police issue stern warning against seizure of Osun LG premises

The Osun State Police Command has issued a stern warning against any attempt by individuals or groups to forcibly take control of local government areas or occupy their premises while the matter remains before the courts.

The warning followed reports received by the command about alleged plans to seize control of some local government areas despite the ongoing judicial proceedings.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday on behalf of the Commissioner of Police (Election), Samuel Erale.

Ojelabi said resorting to force in the circumstances would amount to self-help and could undermine peace and public order in the state.

“No individual, political group, or association has the right to resort to self-help or the use of force to assume control of any Local Government Area or public institution while judicial proceedings are ongoing,” Ojelabi said.

The command advised all parties to remain patient and allow the courts to resolve the dispute in line with the law.

It also warned that those who attempt to occupy, disrupt or take over local government facilities by force would face arrest and prosecution.

“Any attempt to forcibly occupy or disrupt Local Government facilities will be viewed as a serious breach of the peace and dealt with decisively in accordance with the law, including arrest and prosecution of persons found culpable,” the statement partly read.

The police further appealed to parents, traditional and community leaders, political leaders, youth organisations and other stakeholders to restrain their supporters from engaging in acts capable of threatening peace and security.

Eralе also congratulated residents of Osun on what he described as the peaceful and successful conclusion of the recent governorship election.

He commended the various stakeholders for their participation in the democratic process and urged residents to remain calm while the legal process continues.

“The Police will continue to protect lives and property and maintain peace and public order throughout the State,” Ojelabi stated.
