Arsenal recorded a 1-0 victory over Aston Villa on Monday, with Bukayo Saka scoring the decisive goal in a closely contested encounter.
The match saw Arsenal dominate possession for long periods but struggle to break down a disciplined Aston Villa defence until Saka found the breakthrough in the 59th minute.
The first half ended goalless despite opportunities at both ends. Arsenal controlled much of the possession and created several openings, while Villa remained dangerous on the counter.
Villa came closest to taking the lead in the 12th minute when Emiliano Buendia collected a rebound on the edge of the Arsenal penalty area and struck the crossbar.
Arsenal continued to apply pressure, with Declan Rice testing goalkeeper Zion Suzuki with a header from a corner, while Saka and Myles Lewis-Skelly also had efforts blocked or saved.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta made an attacking change at half-time, introducing Eberechi Eze for Christos Tzolis as the visitors looked to increase their threat in the final third.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 59th minute.
Riccardo Calafiori created the opening inside the penalty area before setting up Saka, who calmly rolled his finish into the bottom-left corner beyond Suzuki to give Arsenal a 1-0 advantage.
Villa attempted to respond, but Arsenal’s defence largely contained their attacks. John McGinn tried his luck from distance in the 68th minute, but his effort was blocked.
The hosts also had opportunities from set pieces, but Arsenal repeatedly cleared the danger.
There was late drama when Cristhian Mosquera went down injured and required treatment, while both teams made several substitutions as the match entered its closing stages.
Arsenal had 66 per cent possession by the 66th minute, compared with Villa’s 34 per cent, reflecting the visitors’ control of the game for significant periods.
