South African music star Tyla Laura Seethal has spoken on the need for a unified Africa, weeks after receiving heavy backlash for not speaking against xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

The statement was given during the South African Music Awards over the weekend. Tyla expressed her pride in her heritage, stressing that she is proud to be South African.

She also stressed that unity in the continent is important, praying that she gets to see an experience a unified Africa in the nearest future.

”And I am just so happy to be South African. I’m happy to be African most of all. I pray one day to see a unified Africa. It’s so important,” she said.

The singer was criticised by Nigerians for not using her platform speak against attacks on foreigners in South Africa. Shortly after, she removed her previously scheduled Lagos show from the list of performances in her upcoming tour.
