Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan produced a stunning late surge to claim the silver medal in the women’s 100m hurdles final at the World Ultimate Championships in Budapest, Hungary, on Friday.
Amusan clocked 12.34 seconds to finish second behind American Masai Russell, who won the gold medal in 12.22 seconds, while Nadine Visser of the Netherlands took bronze in 12.39 seconds.
The Nigerian hurdler’s silver medal was particularly impressive given the way the race unfolded.
Three athletes were ahead of Amusan after the first five barriers, leaving her with considerable ground to make up in the closing stages.
But the Nigerian dug deep and mounted a powerful comeback, gradually clawing her way through the field before crossing the finish line in second place.
Amusan herself appeared surprised by the result immediately after the race, with footage capturing the emotional moment she realised that she had secured the silver medal.
The dramatic finish underlined Amusan’s fighting spirit as she refused to surrender despite trailing several competitors midway through the race.
Russell dominated the final to take gold in 12.22 seconds, while Amusan’s 12.34 earned her the runner-up position. Visser completed the podium in 12.39.
Behind the leading trio were Devynne Charlton of the Bahamas, who finished fourth in 12.40 seconds, Jamaica’s Megan Simmonds in 12.42 seconds and American Alaysha Johnson in 12.46 seconds.
The race was run with a favourable but legal wind reading of +0.1 metres per second.
