The National Emergency Management Agency has asked people living in riverine areas of Anambra State to stay alert and prepare to move to higher ground as the River Niger continues to rise.
Officials from NEMA, the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency, and the Nigerian Red Cross Society checked the water levels on Friday at the National Inland Waterways Authority in Onitsha.
The Head of NEMA’s Enugu Operations Office, Priscilla Madukwe, explained that while the water level is currently within safe limits, it is steadily rising.
She urged residents living along the river not to wait until floodwaters reach their homes before taking action.
Emergency agencies are continuously monitoring the river so they can share quick updates and help communities move to safe locations if the water crosses the safety line.
