Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has praised the Department of State Services (DSS) for the arrest of three suspects allegedly linked to the deadly attack on Ayilamo community in Logo Local Government Area.
The attack, which occurred on Thursday, reportedly claimed the lives of several residents, including four police officers.
In a statement issued by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, Alia condemned the incident and described the arrests as an important development in efforts to unravel the circumstances surrounding the attack.
The governor urged the DSS to deepen its investigation and thoroughly examine the information obtained from the suspects.
He said, “We urge the DSS to intensify its investigation and make the best use of the information obtained from the suspects in its custody.”
Alia described the incident as a serious threat to the safety of residents and the peace of the state, calling it a “despicable attack on the peace-loving people of Ayilamo and a grave threat to the security and stability of Benue State.
“The reported killing of four law enforcement officers is particularly painful and underscores the enormous sacrifices being made by security personnel in the line of duty.”
The governor said the attack further highlighted the persistent insecurity affecting vulnerable communities and security personnel in the area.
Expressing sympathy to those affected, Alia said, “I extend heartfelt condolences to the people of Ayilamo, the families of all the victims, and the entire Logo Local Government community. We mourn with you and assure you that you are not alone in this difficult period.”
He also condoled with the Inspector-General of Police and the Commissioner of Police, Benue State Command, over the deaths of the four officers who lost their lives while serving the country.
He said, “We honour their courage and sacrifice and pray that God grants their families, colleagues, and loved ones the strength to bear this irreparable loss.”
On the ongoing investigation, Alia called for efforts to extend beyond the three arrested suspects, urging security agencies to track down everyone connected to the incident.
He said, “Every available lead should be diligently followed to identify and arrest the remaining accomplices, sponsors, collaborators, and other persons connected with the attack. All those found culpable must face the full weight of the law.”
The governor further pledged continued cooperation between his administration and security agencies to improve security around Ayilamo, Logo and other communities considered vulnerable to attacks.
He said, “We are committed to supporting efforts aimed at preventing further attacks, protecting residents, restoring peace, and ensuring that affected communities receive the necessary attention and support.”
Alia appealed to residents of Ayilamo and neighbouring communities to remain peaceful and vigilant while the investigation continues.
“We appeal to the people of Ayilamo and surrounding communities to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding.
“I encourage residents to provide credible and timely information to the security agencies while refraining from actions that could heighten tension or undermine the ongoing investigation.”
The governor assured residents that the government would continue to stand by communities affected by insecurity, stressing, “We remain resolute in our determination to protect lives and property, uphold justice, and restore lasting peace across Benue State.”
