Brighton & Hove Albion stunned Premier League champions Arsenal with a commanding 3-0 victory at the American Express Stadium on Saturday, handing Mikel Arteta’s side their first league defeat of the season.
The Seagulls produced an impressive display of attacking efficiency and defensive organisation to dismantle an Arsenal side that had won its opening four Premier League matches.
Brighton took the lead in the 31st minute when Pascal Groß found space on the edge of the penalty area before firing an accurate effort into the bottom-right corner.
Arsenal attempted to respond, with Bruno Guimarães going close and Bukayo Saka seeing an effort blocked, but Brighton remained dangerous and continued to threaten the visitors’ defence.
The hosts doubled their advantage just before half-time when Charalampos Kostoulas produced a powerful strike that flew into the bottom-left corner, leaving goalkeeper David Raya with no chance.
Arsenal went into the interval 2-0 down and faced the task of finding a way back into a match Brighton had increasingly taken control of.
Instead, the Seagulls extended their advantage 12 minutes after the restart.
Chema Andrés rose above the Arsenal defence to meet a corner and headed the ball into the bottom-right corner, making it 3-0 in the 57th minute.
Arsenal continued to search for a response. Kai Havertz forced a save from the Brighton goalkeeper in the 78th minute, while Saka and Riccardo Calafiori also had efforts that failed to produce a goal.
But Brighton remained disciplined and protected their three-goal advantage through the closing stages.
The result is a major setback for Arsenal, who had arrived on the south coast with a perfect four-from-four league record. The champions had also won their opening seven matches in all competitions before Saturday’s defeat.
Brighton, meanwhile, continued the momentum generated by their impressive start to the campaign. Before facing Arsenal, Fabian Hürzeler’s side had collected seven points from their opening four league matches and had thrashed Coventry City 5-0 in their previous Premier League outing.
The victory also marked a statement performance from Brighton against the reigning champions, with Groß, Kostoulas and Andrés providing the goals that completed a memorable afternoon for the home side.
