A Federal High Court in Lagos has put off hearing the case of detained socialite and businessman Afolabi Kazeem Michael, popularly known as KC Luxury, until September 21, 2026.
Justice Friday Ogazi agreed to postpone the matter after lawyers from both sides asked the court to wait for a decision from another court about whether it even has the power to handle the case.
Kazeem’s lead lawyer, Abdulakeem Labi-Lawal, argued that the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) should not keep his client locked up indefinitely.
He pointed out that even though the agency got an order to hold Kazeem for 30 days while investigating him for alleged drug trafficking, they still have the power to release him on bail if they are satisfied with their progress.
The defense team is asking the court to drop the detention order altogether because no official charges have been filed against Kazeem.
His lawyers explained that under the law, a court can only hold a suspect who hasn’t been charged for 14 days at a time, not 30 days all at once.
They argued that keeping him locked up like this violates his basic right to freedom.
The NDLEA lawyer, Abu Ibrahim, did not oppose the request to delay the hearing, explaining that they had already gotten the 30-day detention order back in August before Kazeem challenged it.
Justice Ogazi then picked September 21 for the court to meet again and continue the case.
