Tragedy has struck Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State after no fewer than 24 people died after consuming a deadly herbal drink.
The incident happened over the weekend across two communities Araromi Obu and Odigbo town.
Victims reportedly passed out shortly after drinking the liquid at different locations.
Some died in their sleep, others collapsed after reaching home, and several more remain in critical condition in local hospitals.
Eight deaths were reported in Araromi Obu, while 16 people died in Odigbo town.
In response to the crisis, local government chairman Taiwo Adegoroye banned the sale and consumption of all locally brewed alcoholic drinks in the area.
He added that preliminary checks by local health officials suggest a strong link between the deaths and the herbal concoction, though officials are awaiting full autopsy results from the Ministry of Health.
State Health Commissioner Dr. Banji Ajaka confirmed that medical teams have launched a full investigation to pinpoint the exact substance responsible.
The sudden deaths triggered anger among local youths, who marched to the palace of the traditional ruler, Oba Rufus Akinrinmade, demanding answers.
The monarch urged calm, assuring residents that authorities are working to solve the mystery and prevent any further loss of life.
