Former Kano State governor and NDC vice-presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, alongside Amnesty International, has condemned the killing of political commentator Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu and called for a thorough investigation into the incident.
Dan Shagamu was reportedly found dead in a pool of blood inside his residence in the Gaida area of Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State.
Kwankwaso described the killing as disturbing, urging the Kano State Government to immediately establish an investigative panel to determine the circumstances surrounding the death and bring those responsible to justice.
“I am deeply disturbed by the killing of the renowned social media political commentator Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu, whose body was found today in a pool of his blood at his home in Kano,” Kwankwaso said.
He described the incident as a “horrific attack” and warned that failure to take transparent action would lead to further investigation by an incoming NDC administration.
Kwankwaso also called on authorities to protect freedom of expression, stressing that criticism and political opinions should not expose citizens to attacks.
Meanwhile, Amnesty International condemned the killing, saying outspoken individuals and critics should be protected in a democratic society.
The rights organisation urged Nigerian authorities to investigate the incident and ensure that anyone found responsible is prosecuted.
“In a democracy, outspoken persons or critics are accommodated, listened to, not killed,” Amnesty said.
Amnesty also expressed concern over increasing reports of killings, threats and intimidation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The NDC governorship candidate in Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, also described the killing as “heinous, barbaric and totally condemnable.”
Gwarzo called on security agencies to identify and prosecute those behind the attack, while urging residents to remain calm and avoid any reprisal actions.
The Kano State Police Command had earlier confirmed the arrest of two suspects in connection with Dan Shagamu’s death, with investigations ongoing.
