At least 82 people have died and dozens are injured after a gold mine collapsed at an informal mining site in West Kordofan, Sudan.
Local miners spent the entire night digging through sand and rock with basic hand tools to pull out bodies.
Dozens of workers are still trapped underground, and hopes of finding them alive are fading fast because there is no heavy machinery available to clear the heavy rubble.
Dangerous, unregulated mining has jumped across Sudan as millions of young people look for work during the country’s ongoing civil war.
The area where the mine caved in is currently controlled by the Rapid Support Forces, a paramilitary group fighting the national army.
