Arsenal secured a 2-0 victory over Sunderland in their Premier League encounter on Saturday, with Bruno Guimaraes opening the scoring before Bukayo Saka converted a late penalty to seal the points.
The result was settled in the second half after Arsenal had dominated possession for much of the opening period but failed to break through Sunderland’s defence.
Arsenal controlled 75 per cent of possession in the first half and created several opportunities, with Kai Havertz coming closest when his effort from the edge of the box forced Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs into a sharp save.
Gabriel also came close for the visitors when his long-range effort narrowly missed the right post, while Havertz fired over the crossbar after connecting with a pass from Martin Odegaard.
Sunderland threatened from set pieces, with Daniel Ballard heading narrowly wide from a free kick in the 16th minute.
The hosts continued to create openings but were unable to capitalise, and Arsenal eventually found the breakthrough 13 minutes into the second half.
Guimaraes put Arsenal ahead in the 58th minute with a superb long-range strike after receiving a pass from Declan Rice. His effort found the top-right corner via the post, leaving Roefs with no chance.
Sunderland were presented with a golden opportunity to respond shortly afterwards when Arsenal conceded a penalty in the 54th minute.
Enzo Le Fee stepped up to take the spot kick, but Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya produced an excellent save, pushing the effort onto the post to preserve his side’s lead.
Sunderland pressed for an equaliser and came close on several occasions. Nordi Mukiele headed over from a promising position and later missed another major opportunity when Raya reacted quickly to deny him from close range.
Arsenal thought they had doubled their advantage in the 78th minute when Jurrien Timber found the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
The visitors eventually got their second goal deep into stoppage time.
Sunderland defender Reinildo Mandava was shown a second yellow card in the 96th minute after committing a foul inside the penalty area, with the referee awarding Arsenal a spot kick following consultation with the assistant referee.
Saka stepped up in the 97th minute. Although Roefs got a hand to his penalty, the ball still found the bottom-right corner to make it 2-0.
The goal effectively ended Sunderland’s hopes of salvaging a point, with Arsenal seeing out the remaining minutes to complete a hard-earned victory.
