Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has commissioned an ultra-modern hostel facility at the Lagos State College of Nursing (LASCON), Igando, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to human capital development and the strengthening of healthcare manpower in the state.
The facility, commissioned on Friday, has a capacity to accommodate more than 250 students and is equipped with training and registration facilities, solar power infrastructure and round-the-clock CCTV surveillance.
The commissioning was witnessed by the First Lady of Lagos State, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, Secretary to the State Government, Mrs Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, Head of Service, Mr Bode Agoro, as well as government officials, traditional rulers and political leaders.
Speaking at the event, Sanwo-Olu said the project was more than the provision of accommodation, describing it as an investment in human capital, student welfare and the quality of nursing education in Lagos.
He said his administration remained committed to providing infrastructure that would support sustainable development and strengthen the state’s capacity to meet the healthcare needs of its growing population.
The governor urged the management, lecturers and students of LASCON to take ownership of the facility and ensure its proper maintenance and effective use.
He also assured the institution of continued government support, saying efforts were underway to complete other projects and further develop LASCON towards awarding a full bachelor’s degree in Nursing.
Sanwo-Olu described nurses as indispensable members of the healthcare system, noting that their expertise and dedication were critical to addressing the healthcare needs of Lagos residents.
He disclosed that the state government was also pursuing approval for the establishment of a University of Medical Sciences in Lagos State.
According to him, the proposed university would expand the state’s capacity to train doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals needed to address shortages in skilled manpower within the health sector.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tolani Sule, commended the governor for his administration’s continued investment in education infrastructure.
Sule described the new hostel as an important facility for empowering young people and preparing future nurses with the skills, professionalism and character required to contribute to society.
He said the project demonstrated the government’s commitment to improving tertiary education and creating a conducive environment for students to acquire relevant skills.
The Provost of LASCON, Dr Ayodeji Ogunmuyiwa, in her welcome address, expressed appreciation to the Sanwo-Olu administration for its investments in the institution, particularly in infrastructure and expansion.
She said the new hostel would increase the college’s capacity to train more nurses at a time when Lagos State and Nigeria continue to face shortages of healthcare professionals.
Ogunmuyiwa also highlighted some of the institution’s recent achievements, including a 100 per cent success rate in professional examinations, an upgraded Information and Communication Technology centre and a modern Computer-Based Test centre for digital assessments.
She, however, called for further government support to enable the institution to expand its capacity and contribute more effectively to the development of Nigeria’s healthcare workforce.
The commissioning of the hostel marks another addition to infrastructure at LASCON as the Lagos State Government continues to link investments in education and healthcare training with efforts to strengthen the state’s health system.
