Davido reveals why Tinubu could cruise to 2027 victory

Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu could have a strong advantage in the 2027 presidential election if opposition parties remain divided.

Davido made the assessment during an interview with News Central on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, while discussing Nigeria’s political landscape and the outcome of the recently concluded Osun State governorship election.

The singer said his prediction was based less on personal support for Tinubu than on what he described as the inability of opposition politicians to form a united political force capable of challenging the incumbent.

Davido said that if he had to bet on the likely outcome under the present circumstances, he would favour Tinubu because the opposition remained fragmented.

He particularly pointed to the large number of politicians reportedly positioning themselves for the presidency, arguing that their individual ambitions could weaken the chances of defeating the incumbent.

“In the South alone, almost eight people want to be president. Why can’t all of you guys sit down together?” Davido said.

He argued that a single opposition candidate backed by the various political groups could present a much stronger challenge to Tinubu.

“Because let me tell you, if there was a unified opposition, presidents might have a problem. But they’re not unified,” he added.

Despite his assessment of Tinubu’s advantage, Davido said the recently concluded Osun governorship election had given him some optimism about Nigeria’s political future.

He pointed particularly to the role of young Nigerians, whom he described as the force capable of driving political change in the country.

“From what happened in Osun, there’s still hope. All the youths in Nigeria were the future, were the ones in charge now,” he said.

Davido’s comments come amid renewed political activity ahead of the 2027 general election and growing efforts by opposition groups to develop alliances that could challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress.

The singer has previously sought to distinguish his personal political views from those of his uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, who has openly expressed support for Tinubu.

Davido has said his support for Adeleke during the Osun governorship election was primarily based on their family relationship and should not be interpreted as an endorsement of a broader political platform.

He has also said he is not currently backing any particular presidential candidate for 2027.

The singer has previously criticised Nigeria’s political system, describing it as deeply problematic, while maintaining that Nigerians should have the freedom to make their own political choices.

His latest remarks therefore appear to focus more on the strategic realities of the 2027 contest than on a personal endorsement of Tinubu.
